As Georgia’s Health Sciences University, the Medical College of Georgia’s impact on state’s health and well-being is incalculable. As the Augusta metro area’s third-largest employer, MCG’s economic impact exceeds $1 billion, according to research commissioned by the University System of Georgia.
Factor in MCG’s clinical facilities – operated by the non-profit MCGHealth, Inc. – and the campus becomes the region’s second-largest employer, with an economic footprint of nearly $1.9 billion. The figure includes a multiplier that accounts for the re-spending of dollars in the community.
The Selig Center for Economic Growth in the University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business reported the following highlights in its research report for MCG’s 2008 fiscal year:
Direct employment: 4,700
On- and off-campus clinical employees: 6,500
Off-campus jobs supported by institutional spending: 4,000
Direct spending (university only): $633 million
Total economic impact (university only): $1.03 billion
Total economic impact (university and clinical facilities): $1.892 billion*
